Watkins Glen State Park, NY

This visit to Glen Falls was part of a longer trip through the Finger Lakes and Niagara Falls, a stretch of travel that combined long drives, short stops, and a few places we stayed longer than planned.

Watkins Glen State Park is located at the southern tip of Seneca Lake and is best known for its narrow gorge, carved over thousands of years by Glen Creek. Within less than two miles, the creek drops hundreds of feet, creating a series of waterfalls, stone staircases, bridges, and cliff walls that feel far more dramatic than the short distance suggests.

About the park

  • Water source: Glen Creek
  • Part of a gorge trail system with stone steps and bridges
  • Accessible by walking trails; not suitable for swimming
  • Popular stop for families and casual hikers
  • Watkins Glen State Park includes playground and picnic areas near the main entrance and pool facilities, which can be a good place for kids to unwind before or after hiking the gorge.

Where

Watkins Glen State Park is located in the village of Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern end of Seneca Lake.

Parking is available near the park entrances, including the main entrance close to the village.

A secondary/upper entrance parking area exists at the top of the gorge trail, which some visitors use if the main lot is full or if they want to start the hike from the top.

Practical tips for visiting
